Instructions
Section 1: Biking (Flat Creek Loop)
Start on the wide trail at the end of the parking lot that is farthest from the road. As you continue on the wide trail another trail will enter from the right. Ignore this trail and continue up hill. After a short climb you will see another trail enter from the left. Go straight, ignore the trail, this is where you will eventually finish the loop. ontinue up the hill until you come to your first small stream crossing. Answer the following question.
Question 1. What direction is the creek flowing? Please answer in degrees.
Continue on up the hill and eventually enjoy the long, fun, rocky downhill. You will cross several small streams and eventually be forced to make a sharp left because the trail ahead of you is blocked by a small directional trail marker and fallen trees across the trail. At this sharp left answer the next question.
Question 2. What 3 symbols appear on the trail marker? List them in order.
Continue along the trail, and cross over Flat Creek. The trail will start to go uphill shortly after and eventually you will merge with another trail which will complete the Flat Creek Loop. Head right for a short down hill ride to the parking lot, and prepare for a run.
Section 2: Running/Hiking (Deep Gap to Stanley Gap and Back)
Again follow the wide trail at the end of the parking lot that is farthest from the road. The trail that leads to Stanley gap will come in from the right. Take that Right and eventually you will come to a trail intersection. You are going to Stanley Gap so take the right. Up the hill you will come to your next trail intersection where the Benton MacKaye Trail enters from the right. Stop here and answer your next question.
Question 3.What is on the last line of the Benton Mackaye trail marker? (Hint: We are looking for the line below the word Vehicles.)
Continue on the trail towards Stanley Gap. Eventually you will reach another intersection and the Benton MacKaye trail will enter from the left. Pass this intersection and continue on towards Stanley Gap. The trail will widen, turn into an old road bed and enter a dirt parking area. You are now half way through the run. Find the allowed use marker where the trail comes into the parking lot. Answer the last question.
Question 4. List ALL the symbols/meanings that appears on the marker? (Hint: List out what is allowed and what is not allowed, and the governing body that enforces it)
Go back the way you came and follow the signs pack to the parking lot at Deep Gap.
When you arrive back at the parking lot you are officially done with the ARTI event.
Optional Section: More Biking (Green Mountain Trail)
Across Aska Road from the Deep Gap parking lot 2 trails intersects the road. Take either trail and they will eventually meet. When the trails merge continue on the merged Green Mountain Trail. You will eventually come to an intersection where the Green Mountain Connector Trail enters from the right. Pass this trail and follow the white blazed trail down hill to the lake. The trail officially ends when it hits Forest Service (FS) Rd 711. If you want you can follow the FS road for about a mile to the lake. Turn around and retrace your steps on the Green Mountain Trail until you reach the Deep Gap parking lot.
